butterflies, flowers and mushrooms- oh my!

This is actually another camping blog. We went NE of Payson below the Mogollon rim which is beautiful with nice cool temperatures. It was a rainy weekend but crafty Shyam kept us dry:)

This butterfly posed for us, how lucky we were!

Crafty Shyam kept us dry with this concoction...love my eagle scout;)

This was a hike we did, roundtrip 8 miles, Bilis' first 8 mile hike and we learned she doesnt hate hiking she hates hiking in the desert!

She loves being off the leash and distance between us. She just runs back and forth b/n us at her fastest speed! that's me in red and that's Bilis running toward daddy:)

The hike followed a creek that took us up to a spring.
Below are a number of flowers that i took pictures of...unfortunatley i dont know the names of all of them....

this is lupine that has caught a bunch of raindrops.

same idea here with the evergreen holding on to the raindrops-its worth dbl clicking on to see it closer:)

Here is greatness, i was amazed to see how many wild mushrooms there were on this hike. They are all so unique! again, i dont know the names but i will soon- i have to invest in a mushroom field book now!

Shyama came out to work with me last weekend and this was his reward:) Actually it was stormy all morning and we could see the rain and lightening coming down all around us. this was taken on our way down after monitoring-it was such a beauty! def. dbl click on this one so you can see the rainbow:)

This was pretty cool with the sun just barely coming through a spot in the clouds like it was shining specifically for something or someone.

another cool one

these clouds were so angry all morning

these clouds were like an angry ocean just above us, quite intense!

just another desert sunrise:)

So the other morning i get to the top of my OP and there is this lil warbler flittering and chirping around me on the rocks and i am like wow the bird is actually gonna pose for me-so i start taking pictures of him, when i notice on my camera that there is something striped right next to the bird, mind you its not fully light when we get to the top....if you look very carefully, you can see the bird sittting on a rock and just below a speckled rattlesnake. he was warning me-no-rather he was letting the rattler know that he was not welcome! i was really hoping for a nature moment where the snake would catch the bird, that woulda been awesome!

So this guy just chilled-not really-he warmed up on these rocks and let me take some shots of him. he didnt move the whole time i monitored and at one point i thought he coulda been dead. after about an hour and a half i was packing up and thought i would get a couple more shots in-well, apparently he was warm enough then cuz he backed up and gave me a shake of his rattle before crawling underneath the rocks:) Probably one of the coolest moments of work so far!

hope you guys enjoy! we will be talking soon! We would love to see your smiling faces in the desert this winter!

  1. Hey snake-lady, how do you get all these cool pictures. I'm sure snakes are nice and needed in nature, but I would rather eat them. Maybe we could raise them like chickens. I don't see any chickens in the wild and they taste good, maybe we could do the same with snakes.

That is a very nice set up of the camp in the rain. I've only camped once in the rain and it did not turn out well. I keep wondering how the rope was tied on the tarp so high on the tree. Either Shayma scaled a tree or Bilis jumped up there and tied the knot.

I heard that the best way to figure out what type of mushrooms are in the wild is to taste them. Each one has a very distinct flavor. So I've heard.

It is my belief that your desert storms are going to trump my puny east coast storms. Your forcing me to drive down to Florida just to take pics of a hurricane. Actually, that sounds kinda crazy cool.

Oh well, pour some for your homies,
    sh
